How to shop on Taobao from outside China using LitBuy: finding listings, reading seller ratings, sizing, what an order costs including shipping and import charges, and how returns work.

Written by Miki · Updated 18 September 2026

Taobao is China's largest consumer marketplace, with hundreds of millions of listings across clothing, electronics, home goods and hobby supplies, many of them sold directly by the factories that make them. The catch for anyone outside China is that most sellers do not ship internationally, do not accept foreign cards and communicate only in Chinese. A shopping agent such as LitBuy solves all three problems. This guide walks through the full process: how to find good listings, how to read a Taobao seller's reputation, what a finished order costs once shipping and import charges are included, and what to do when something goes wrong.

What is Taobao?

Taobao (淘宝) is owned by Alibaba Group and launched in 2003. It is a consumer-to-consumer and small-business marketplace, closest in feel to a mix of eBay and Amazon, and the default shopping site for most Chinese consumers. Listings range from factory outlets to individual resellers, so quality varies widely and reading the seller's history matters as much as the product photos.

Why people shop on Taobao

  • Products are often significantly cheaper than the same category in Western retail, especially unbranded clothing, accessories and home goods
  • Enormous selection, including items that are never exported
  • Many sellers are the manufacturer, so customization (sizes, colors, engraving) is common
  • Fashion and gadget trends appear on Taobao months before they reach Western marketplaces

How to buy from Taobao using LitBuy

Taobao does not ship abroad and needs a Chinese payment method, so an agent is the practical route.

  1. Find a listing. Browse our LitBuy spreadsheet for pre-checked links, or search Taobao directly with translated keywords. Check the seller rating and the reviews with buyer photos.
  2. Submit the link to LitBuy. Register on litbuy.com (invite code 137664 adds the current welcome coupons), paste the product URL, select size, color and quantity, and pay for the item plus LitBuy's service fee.
  3. LitBuy buys and receives the item. LitBuy pays the seller in yuan, tracks the domestic shipment and logs the item at its warehouse in China. QC photos are taken so you can inspect the item before it leaves.
  4. Choose a shipping line. Economy air (15 to 30 days), standard air (10 to 20 days) or express courier (4 to 8 days). Enter the customs declaration using the value you paid. See the shipping guide.
  5. Track the parcel. LitBuy provides a tracking number; the carrier's own site usually has more detail once the parcel is in your country.

Tips for successful Taobao shopping

1. Check seller ratings

Prefer sellers with:

  • A high positive-feedback percentage and a long history (two or more years)
  • Diamond or crown level badges, which reflect cumulative sales volume
  • Many reviews with buyer photos
  • Fast response times in the seller's stats

2. Read the listing carefully

  • Size charts are in centimeters and run smaller than Western sizes; measure a garment you own and compare
  • Material and composition are listed in the parameter block; translate it
  • Look at the buyer-photo reviews, not the seller's studio photos
  • Note whether the listed price is for one item or a set

3. Use LitBuy to ask questions

  • LitBuy can contact the seller about stock, measurements and customization
  • Request extra warehouse photos if the QC set does not show what you need

4. Bundle orders

  • Wait until several items are in the warehouse and ship once
  • International shipping has a large first-kilogram fee, so consolidating saves the most on small items

5. Plan around Chinese holidays

  • Chinese New Year (January or February) and Golden Week (early October) add one to three weeks
  • Singles' Day (11 November) has the best prices but slow domestic shipping

Common mistakes to avoid

Sizing

Order by measurements, not by letter size. When a listing gives both, trust the centimeters. If you are between sizes, size up.

Skipping the QC photos

The QC photos are your only chance to reject an item before it ships. Check color, logos, stitching and included accessories. A return from the warehouse to the seller is cheap; a return after international shipping rarely is.

Overpaying for shipping

Remove shoe boxes and retail packaging, consolidate, and compare lines in the estimator. For heavy items, check sea or rail.

Ignoring import charges

The United States removed its $800 de minimis exemption in August 2025, so all US parcels are dutiable. EU and UK parcels are subject to VAT from the first euro or pound. Declare the value you paid and use our customs calculator to see the landed cost before you buy.

Taobao vs 1688 vs Weidian

  • Taobao: single items, consumer-focused, strongest buyer protection, widest selection
  • 1688: wholesale, minimum order quantities, lowest unit prices
  • Weidian: mobile-first small shops, low prices, thinner protection

Use Taobao for general shopping, 1688 for bulk, Weidian for niche fashion. The full comparison is in 1688 vs Taobao vs Weidian.

Cost breakdown

Example: $100 of products, about 1.5 kg, to a UK address.

  • Product cost: $100
  • Domestic shipping to LitBuy warehouse: $3 to $8
  • LitBuy service fee (5 to 10 percent): $5 to $10
  • International shipping, standard air: $26 to $40
  • UK import VAT (20 percent of goods plus shipping): about $27 to $32
  • Estimated total: $161 to $190

For clothing, accessories and home goods, that total is usually still well below what comparable items cost in Western retail. For heavy, low-value items the shipping cost can erase the difference, so run the numbers first.

Payment methods

LitBuy accepts major credit and debit cards and, depending on region, PayPal and local payment options. You do not need Alipay, WeChat Pay, a Chinese bank account or a Chinese phone number. Check litbuy.com for the current list.

Returns and defective items

Before international shipping: if the QC photos show the wrong item, size or a defect, open a return or exchange in LitBuy. Most Taobao sellers accept returns within 7 days of the item reaching the warehouse if it is unused; LitBuy handles the communication and the domestic return shipping is small.

After international shipping: contact LitBuy support with photos within 48 hours of delivery. Damage in transit is covered if you bought shipping insurance. Returning goods to China for a seller refund is usually not worth the shipping cost; a partial refund negotiated by LitBuy is the more common outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know Chinese? No. LitBuy's interface and support are in English, and browser translation is enough for reading listings.

How long does shipping take? Standard air 10 to 20 days, express 4 to 8 days, economy 15 to 30 days, plus 2 to 7 days for the seller to reach the warehouse and 1 to 3 days for QC.

How do I know what I will receive? The QC photos show the actual item in the warehouse. Compare them with the listing and the buyer-photo reviews before you ship. If a listing uses a brand name it is not authorized to use, do not order it; customs can seize the parcel and there is no refund.

What if my parcel gets lost? Every line is tracked. If tracking stops for more than 10 days on air or 30 days on sea, contact LitBuy support. Shipping insurance, typically 2 to 5 percent of the declared value, is what actually pays out for a lost parcel.

Can I buy electronics? Yes. Check the voltage (China uses 220 V) and plug type, and whether the device needs a Chinese app or account to work.
